Ingredients

  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed Any type of sturdy bread works well, such as baguette, brioche, or challah.
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins Optional.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Equipment

  • 1 8-inch square baking dish
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease your baking dish with a bit of the melted butter.
  2. Place the bread cubes into the baking dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them evenly over the bread.
  3. In the mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press down with the back of a spoon to help the bread soak up the liquid.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the pudding.
  6. Let the mixture rest for about 10 minutes, so the bread fully absorbs the custard.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes, or until the pudding is golden brown and the center is set.
  8. Allow it to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Any type of sturdy bread works well, such as baguette, brioche, or challah.
Stale or day-old bread is best for absorbing the custard mixture.
Feel free to add chopped nuts or chocolate chips for extra texture and flavor.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat before serving for best taste.
