Ingredients
  

  • 4 slices sandwich bread
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 4 slices tomato optional
  • 4 slices cooked ham or turkey optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano or basil optional
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper

  • 1 Spatula

  • 1 Cutting board

Method
 

  1. Place bread slices on a cutting board. Spread a thin layer of softened butter evenly over one side of each slice.
  2. Flip the bread slices over (buttered side down). Lay one slice of cheddar and one slice of mozzarella cheese on two of the bread slices. Add tomato slices and ham or turkey, if using. Sprinkle with dried herbs, salt, and pepper.
  3. Top each with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
  4. Preheat skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches in the pan.
  5. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing gently with a spatula, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
  6. Transfer the grilled sandwiches to a cutting board. Let them rest for 1 minute, then slice and serve warm.
  7. For extra crispiness, use a cast-iron skillet and press the sandwich down as it cooks.
  8. Consider swapping the cheese or fillings according to your preferences—add spinach, grilled vegetables, or use whole grain bread for variety.
  9. Serve with a side of soup or salad for a heartier meal.
